Tough Day of qualifying for EMS Racing in Misano heat
EMS
Racing Ruled Out of the Points by Two Spectacular
Crashes
(Sunday 25th June 2006) EMS
Racings' aim of getting both of their riders in the top 15
at the fourth round of the FIM 1000 Superstock Cup,
evaporated in the Italian heat after both Sheridan Morais
and Mark Pollock suffered crashes in an action packed race.
It was a bitterly disappointing end to what looked to be
one of the team’s best races, but despite the lack of
results they remain focussed and confident for the
remaining six rounds of the tough championship.
After qualifying in 14th place, Sheridan made his
characteristic fast start and was soon in the top ten and
looking comfortable. Fighting for position on lap five, he
was forced out of the race when Roberto Lunaedi crashed his
Yamaha R1 right in front of him leaving the South African
EMS Racing rider no where to go. With the only options
available of colliding with the fallen rider or leaving the
track, Sheridan took the later option and crashed his EMS
Racing Suzuki under braking at the Curva del Tramonto
corner at the end of the back straight.
“ The Italian guy, Lunaedi, low sided right in front
of me and there wasn’t a lot I could do. I was either
going to run over him or try and avoid him, but as I was
braking so hard I crashed out myself. It’s really
disappointing because I was feeling good out there and the
guys in front of me were holding me up.” explained
Sheridan.
“ It’s a real pity and it feels strange for me
to be crashing and that’s the second one we’ve
had in the races now. At the end of the day I know it
wasn’t my fault so I’ve already put it out of
my head and I’m thinking about our next race in Brno
in three weeks time. I’ve already done a few laps of
Brno and we’re hoping to get a test in over the next
couple of weeks.” He continued.
Mark Pollock was chasing his first championship points of
the year and looked set for an impressive top 15 finish
when he crashed out of 14th spot with just 3 laps to go. In
what was Marks best performance of the year, the 22 year
old was riding superbly and was still moving up the through
the field with 12th place a realistic possibility when he
lost front wheel grip and crashed out at the high speed
turn one.
“ The race was going well and I was on for a good
result. I was making my way up through the pack all race,
but as I came into turn one I was pushing hard and I just
lost the front. There was no real warning, but luckily
neither myself or the bike were particularly
damaged.” said Mark.
“ Since finishing second at the Race of the Year in
Ireland a couple of weeks ago, I’m feeling a lot more
confident on the EMS Suzuki. Every time I ride it
we’re learning and its definitely getting easier for
me. Now I need to continue the momentum; I’m racing
at Donington this weekend and testing in Assen before our
next race at the end of July.” he concluded.
The next race for the EMS Racing team will be at Brno in
the Czech Republic on 21st to 23rd July
2006.
Saturday 24th
June 2006. The two man EMS Racing team worked hard
throughout two days of qualifying in 30 degree heat for the
fourth round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, but
unfortunately did not get the rewards they deserved.
Sheridan Morais eventually claimed 14th spot for tomorrows
15 lap race after suffering a crash in the final session,
whilst Irishman Mark Pollock ended up in 25th place when he
was held up by another rider on his quick lap. The 4.06KM
Misano circuit is located on the Adriatic coast of Italy
and Sheridan arrived at the circuit full of confidence and
determined to improve on his recent qualifying
performances. The weekend started well when he secured
ninth spot in the first timed session on Friday and the 21
year old was confident of further improvements in the final
session. Unfortunately a crash prevented Sheridan from
improving his lap time and whilst his rivals improved, he
dropped down to 14th place. “I’m absolutely
gutted with that. We tested a couple of weeks ago where I
worked on my qualifying performance and getting the best
out of a new tyre. I went out at the start of the session
and set a good time on my first flying lap and I felt
really confident I could improve a lot on my second lap,
but as I came in to the hairpin I lost the front and then
the rear and crashed out.” he explained “I was
able to continue, but I hurt my foot in the crash and I
just wasn’t able to find my rhythm after that so
didn’t improve my time. It’s disappointing to
be 14th again and it’s going to be hard to get away
with the front guys, but I’m aiming to get a good
start and as I’ve shown this year I’m a better
racer than I am a qualifier.” he continued. Like
Sheridan, Mark Pollock arrived at Misano in high spirits
after a brilliant performance in the Race of the Year in
Ireland where he claimed second place on his Superstock
specification EMS Racing Suzuki against the full blown
Superbikes of his rivals. The result proved a real boost
for Mark, but he was denied a top twenty starting position
after being held up on his fast lap in the final session.
“It’s really disappointing to end up where I
have because I feel I’m riding well and I deserved
better. Since getting a good result at home in the Race of
the Year I’m definitely riding the bike harder now,
but we just went the wrong way with set-up in the final
session and we ran out of time to make a change. The aim
for my first year is to score points and I know I’m
capable of that so I’ll be going flat out from the
start tomorrow to see what we can achieve.” said
Mark. The 15-lap race will get underway at 10.40am and will
prove to be a real test for both rider and machine as even
hotter temperatures are forecast making rider fitness and
tyre life even more crucial than usual.
